Investor FAQ
- The Boston Beer Company was first founded in 1984 by Jim Koch, who brewed a recipe for his great-great grandfather's beer that Jim named, Samuel Adams Boston Lager, after the patriot and revolutionary. Hoping to change what drinkers thought of beer, which at the time was mass-produced, unflavorful, and made with adjunct ingredients, the first cases of Samuel Adams Boston Lager were sold in Boston on Patriot's Day in 1985.
- When Jim first started the company in 1984, his original business plan called for brewing 5,000 barrels of beer after 5 years. But, by 1988, The Boston Beer Company was brewing 36,000 barrels and was able to sell on both coasts. In 2020, we sold more than 7 million barrels of core products, making us one of the largest craft breweries in the United States.
We continue to invest in our breweries in order to expand capacity, efficiency and capabilities. We also have agreements in place with a short-list of brewing and packaging partners who we can call on and work with in the event that we have overwhelming product demands or interruptions at our breweries. We carefully select those partners and ensure that we always have the capability of utilizing traditional brewing methods and maintain first-rate quality throughout brewing, fermentation, finishing and packaging process.
